How to choose a branding agency: a practical checklist
A clear, step-by-step guide to choosing the right branding agency — what to look for in a portfolio, the questions to ask, and the red flags to avoid.
Choosing a branding agency comes down to four things: a portfolio that shows range, a clear process, honest communication, and pricing you understand before you start. If an agency can explain how they work as confidently as they show what they’ve made, you’re in good hands.
Start with the portfolio — but read it properly
Don’t just look for work that’s pretty. Look for variety and problem-solving. A strong portfolio shows different industries, different tones, and — ideally — a short note on what each project needed to achieve. One beautiful logo tells you little; a brand system applied across packaging, web, and social tells you the team can think end to end.
Ask about process, not just deliverables
A good agency should be able to walk you through their stages in plain language:
- Discovery — research, positioning, and understanding your audience
- Direction — moodboards and concepts before any final design
- Design — identity, typography, color, and the core assets
- Delivery — guidelines and files so your brand stays consistent
If the answer is “we’ll just send you some logos,” keep looking.
Questions worth asking before you sign
- Who will actually work on my project day to day?
- How many concept directions do I get, and how many revisions?
- What does the final handoff include — source files, guidelines, fonts?
- What’s the realistic timeline, and what do you need from me?
Red flags
- No clear pricing or a quote that changes constantly
- A portfolio of templates dressed up as custom work
- No questions about your business — only about your logo
The short version
The best branding partner is one that’s curious about your business, transparent about process and price, and able to back up taste with reasoning. At Flyn Lab we build brands with attitude and design with intention — and we’re always happy to explain the why behind every choice.
